Edam and Volendam

Volendam’s fame stretches far and wide, and not without reason. Hoeve Chapeau is only five minutes away from the Dijk, where over a million visits come annually to stroll along the dyke and experience the traditional atmosphere of the town. Traces still remain of the original inhabitants, and present-day attractions include the fish market, the many shops offering antiques and other items and naturally countless restaurants and outdoor cafés. Enjoy a bite to eat and a drink overlooking the harbour and the open water. From the Dijk you can also board a boat that will take you across to the enchanting town of Marken.

Edam is a beautiful old town. A walk through the old centre will lead you past a wealth of well-preserved historical houses, churches, harbours, canals and squares. Some of the buildings even date back to the middle ages. Edam’s rustic atmosphere, the abundance of historical sights and the town’s quaint street plan make a walking tour a magical experience. Traditional events such as the cheese market and the water sports day add to the attraction of Edam, along with cafés and restaurants typical to the local area, and shops offering antiques, art and souvenirs.
