Waterland

Waterland and its marshes and moorlands are full of the splendour of nature, and the marshlands abound with birds in all seasons. In spring, huge numbers arrive for nesting and breeding, while in winter, ducks, geese and swans settle here to rest and feed. Peat moorlands are another distinctive feature of the region, varying from rich, boggy fens to dry and scanty high moorlands. There are also many areas dominated by flowering grasses and reeds.

In addition to natural attractions, Waterland is also dotted with picturesque, traditional countryside towns such as Broek in Waterland, Ilpendam, Katwoude, Marken, Zuiderwoude and Uitdam. These are perfect for exploring by bike or on foot. Monnickendam especially is a wonderful place to discover local history, and also offers a range of possibilities for recreational activities and refreshment.
