Zaanstreek
The Zaanstreek region is home to moorlands, traditional local carpentry, monuments of industrial activity, the River Zaan, small towns and a bustling city centre. The combination of eight small towns and one city makes the Zaanstreek a region of contrasts, and well worth a visit. Throughout the region, on the banks of the Zaan, you will find historical sites ranging from seventeenth-century windmills to nineteenth-century factories, all silent witnesses of a tradition of industry extending back over four hundred years. One especially interesting site in the Zaanstreek is the Zaanse Schans, where historic windmills and museums bring history to life. In old-fashioned shops you can find authentic and artisanal products such as ships’ fittings, cheese, wooden shoes, food, knick-knacks, wooden toys and souvenirs of the Zaanse Schans and the rest of the Netherlands. There are demonstrations of local arts and crafts, boat tours and plenty of refreshment on offer. The Zaanse Schans is open daily. For more information about the Zaanstreek, click here.
