Walking and cycling

Hoeve Chapeau is the perfect base from which to explore the local region by bicycle or on foot. Both we and the local tourist offices can suggest a number of routes along quiet roads, cycle lanes and footpaths through nearby villages and the beautiful countryside.

Volendam, with its old fishing port, charming shops and quaintly-dressed inhabitants, is only a short bike ride away, as is Edam, famous for its red cheeses and lovely historical town centre. Longer trips along the dikes will bring you to the towns of Hoorn and Monnickendam, or you can cross through the marshlands of Waterland and the Purmer, where the traditional farms and quiet towns of Kwadijk, Middellie and De Rijp will transport you to a bygone age. Or, to feel the sea wind in your hair, take the dyke route to the town of Marken.

Possibilities for walking tours are limitless, with both city and village walks and nature tours within reach. The Hemmelanden, Purmerbos, Ilperveld and Twiske nature reserves abound in beauty for lovers of the outdoors. Tourist offices in the nearby cities of Amsterdam, Edam, Hoorn, Purmerend and Zaandam can provide information for city walks, and in Volendam you can follow an art history puzzle route starting from Hotel Spaander.

We will be happy to organize a professionally-guided tour of the Waterland moorlands for people who wish to enjoy the natural beauty of the local countryside.
